How to Avoid Self-Sabotage and Win at Salary Negotiations

The salary negotiation process is one of the most stressful aspects of the job search. Still, most candidates will likely be asked what they’re looking for in terms of salary at some point in the process. So what should you request, and how do you go about asking for it? Should you negotiate for a higher salary and risk coming across as pushy or ungrateful, and could you lose this opportunity if you negotiate for too much? Savvy job seekers anticipate and prepare their responses well in advance.

In this workshop, attendees learn how to skillfully and tactfully approach inevitable salary questions, receiving step-by-step guidelines for leading the discussion and delivering a persuasive reply. I want to express my sincere appreciation for the time you spent in giving the “Transferable Skills” seminar at Duke today. I learned so many valuable things from your presentation. I do not think I would have caught the flaws—the detailed, technical description of my research experience and the lack of incorporating soft skills in describing those experience—in my resume. You provided very helpful advice, and I am looking forward to attending other upcoming seminars provided by you.
