Advancing Your Career with an Individual Development Plan (IDP)

For better or worse, your professional experiences significantly affect and shape the rest of your career. For academics, this includes the training you received as a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow. But how do you manage your time wisely and create a well-defined roadmap that will drive your career in the right direction?

This workshop helps participants enhance their odds of getting the results they want from the career choices and academic investments they’ve made. Learn how to identify clear and precise career goals, using those to design your own Individual Development Plan (IDP). Then turn your ideas into action, formulating a detailed plan for executing your objectives. Learn how to manage up, with tips for discussing your goals with your mentor or manager. Leave the workshop with a step-by-step action plan that you can begin working on right away.

Topics include:

  • Pinpointing your personal strengths and weaknesses
  • Assessing your skills development priorities
  • Transforming your ideas into actions
  • Aligning your goals with your advisor’s, mentor’s, or manager’s plan
  • Prioritizing your goals and holding yourself accountable

Testimonials

Wonderful, wonderful presentation!  You held my attention the entire time!
Graduate Student, Duke University
I wanted to tell you that I just networked myself into an amazing new position. Your workshop really did help and so you certainly get a little bit of the credit for my new job.
Former Postdoctoral Scholar, current Medical Science Liaison
I really enjoyed your workshops on networking and using an IDP. As a trainer, I really appreciated your down-to-earth delivery and the real-world applications of your suggestions.
MRH, 2015 NIEHS Biomedical Career Symposium participant
The speaker clearly had a very good understanding of the realities that students and postdocs in research fields face.
Workshop Participant, Duke University
Dara’s seminars have been invaluable opportunities and critical leaning experiences. She is an excellent speaker and educator on career counseling and professional development topics.
Former NIEHS Fellow, current Field Application Specialist
This was by far the most interesting and helpful RCR workshop that I’ve attended. It was applicable to anyone whereas many workshops that I see advertised seem to have a relatively narrow focus.
Graduate Student (Humanities & Social Science), Duke University
I want to express my sincere appreciation for the time you spent in giving the “Transferable Skills” seminar at Duke today. I learned so many valuable things from your presentation. I do not think I would have caught the flaws—the detailed, technical description of my research experience and the lack of incorporating soft skills in describing those experience—in my resume. You provided very helpful advice, and I am looking forward to attending other upcoming seminars provided by you.
Postdoc, Duke University
Dara has facilitated in improving my interviewing and interpersonal skills, which helped me become more competitive in the job market.
Former Postdoc, Current Medical Writer
Not only is Dara extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter she presents, she goes above and beyond to ensure that she is also knowledgeable about who her audience will be. This results in a workshop that feels individualized and personalized for each participant, even though the presentation itself is to a whole group.
Director, Office of Training & Academic Services, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute
Dara Wilson-Grant is a warm, charming, and phenomenal speaker. Her session on interviewing was the best session I heard all day. She handled questions with poise, offered new information, and gave an overall SMASHING performance.
Postdoctoral Scholar, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
